The ART in FIRE

June Issue 2010

Don’t Play with Matches
When my sons were little much of what we did was based on how safe they would be. I was the protective mother and I still am, I’m proud to say. But now that they are young men (almost) it seems I can’t keep them as safe as I would like.  They have lives to live and sometimes always doing the “safe” thing isn’t the most fun!
Having three sons, playing with fire was one of the first things on my list of don’ts.  However, my middle son Nick always seemed to get close to it a few times a year. He was the child that insisted on putting the birthday candles out with his fingers instead of the traditional method of blowing them out. At 4th of July, he again would somehow manage to get a little burn trying to hold or touch the sparklers… Needless to say when he started teaching himself the art of spinning Poi I was not that concerned, at first  because fire was not involved.  He was only 14 years old and he was using light sticks. It was very trendy and looked like the art of the 70’s to me. But when he wanted to progress to spinning poi with fire I was concerned, a lot!  After seeing him create this beautiful art the last few years, watching in awe at the skill he creates with, all I want to do is see more of it! Now that it has been growing in popularity you can see it everywhere if are aware of it. If this is the first you have seen or heard about it, check it out here in Trends and online at valleytrends.com!
We are sharing this unique and entertaining art and these three artist’s journeys with fire and a lot more.
