Subject: WINTERIZE YOUR GOLF
Author: dklassen 01 5th, 2011What does that mean? How can we or do we “winterize” the game of golf, or our golf swing? That may sound like the silliest thing you have ever heard, but it works!
Most golfers won’t practice, I’m talking about the real kind of practice that pays big dividends, in the spring, summer, or fall. What makes anyone think they are going to do anything about their golf game in the dead of winter?
With all of the cold and ugly weather that comes to our area golf pretty well gets pushed into the back of our minds.
This is a great time to get away to the coast for a few months. If you aren’t able to arrange the time to do that, then you might want to pay attention to what I am going to share with you in this issue.
By the way, I hope you had a great Christmas and that 2011 will be a very happy and healthy year for you. I know your golf will be the better for it if you will take the time to do some indoor practicing.
In the garage, on the patio, or somewhere in the house (ONLY if your ceiling is tall enough), you need to do some practicing in the cold winter months. You do not need golf balls. Don’t even try to use wiffle balls.
Since sports psychology tells us it actually takes 120 golf swings per day for 60 days for us to establish a new “habit”, or way of swinging the club, indoor winter practice can be the time to set some new goals for your golf swing.
The part that makes it all so interesting for me is that without a golf ball, practically every one of us will make a “perfect” golf swing (for our body structure and strengths). Therefore, if you will take the time to do this all winter, you will have a new and wonderful golf swing by spring time.
I had a student come to see me from Canada several years ago who was a 25 handicap golfer. After a few days of instruction he went home with this same assignment, to make at least 120 swings per day throughout his long winter. The following season he became a single digit player.
I have asked students to do this ever since it worked so well for my Canadian friend. Without fail, every student who has disciplined himself to do this has become a far better golfer.
Who would have ever though that swinging a golf club all winter, without a golf ball, would turn them into a better player? I keep telling you, “Golf’s an easy game.”
