Put a New Twist on an Old Classic
Spaces by Cheryl Christman
PUT A NEW TWIST
ON AN OLD CLASSIC!
Think Ernest Hemmingway! When he comes to mind, his world was filled with treasures from his travels, and everything seemed to have some meaning, and sense of history. The richness that time worn pieces bring to a room cannot be purchased. All of these things lend an air of adventure, and help to expand the boundaries of our environment.
There is a wave of nostalgia moving in the world of design. It seems everything old is new again, from trunks, to botanicals, vintage, bleached wood, and folksy patchwork infused ethnic textiles.
How does one make this happen, and bring it together? Good question, it’s all really in the haphazard display of all the things you love. This look is earthy, organic, historic, and time worn. Don’t be afraid to throw everything you love into the mix, and then add or subtract from there.
A great way to start would be, with that tired but comfy chair in the corner. Recovering it in a neutral linen fabric and giving it a finishing touch with nail head trim will lend a refreshed, yet comfortable and personal quality. Restore the library table you have tucked away in the spare bedroom with one of the wood restoring polishes on the market today, and remember the point is not for it to look brand new. Dust off the world globe from childhood that will surely evoke some memories and add it to a grouping of vintage photos in wood, and nickel frames that will instantly add some personality to your space. Maps can make a wonderful wall display, and be great conversation starters, or be a great way to start you dreaming about the places you would like to visit, or maybe you already have! Scour thrift stores and antique shops or even online for vintage maps that can make wonderful wall groupings. Use your collection of artwork to create a “Wall of Art’ from floor to ceiling, maybe paint the wall a contrasting color to pull it together. Various sizes and shapes help create movement. Lay it out on the floor first so you can move it around until you get the right balance. The frames don’t have to match, but should have some continuity.
While the warm tones of leather and linen create the foundation of this look color is playing a huge role with this year’s interpretations. The rooms get a dose of energy, playing off the vibrant and rich colors found in the wonderful medallion infused textiles that are bringing life, and energy and adventure to these unique spaces they inhabit.
As I walk through rooms in this style, I can’t help but feel intrigued by the wonderful collections that tell a story of the people who live there. I hope you take a close look at all the wonderful things you have collected throughout the years and bring it together to enhance your spaces.
