A Taste of Coachella in Visalia!

by Aaron Gomes

Most people don’t have the time in their busy schedule to keep up with all of the new and exciting performers bursting onto the global music scene these days.

Unfortunately the local Central Valley radio airwaves don’t make it easy to discover the world’s newest talents.  Let’s face it.  We don’t really have a radio station in the Central Valley that consistently caters to new music.  Unless you’re tuned into cutting-edge satellite radio stations like SIRIUS XMU you’ve probably been deprived of many of the upcoming artists that larger city radio stations in San Francisco and Los Angeles are spinning in heavier rotation.
But do not fear.  Let me propose to you two quick ways to hear all of the year’s most exciting new artists without tirelessly digging through iTunes, combing cd racks, or fumbling through radio stations.

Go hear new music at the COACHELLA FESTIVAL:
The first way to catch up on the most exciting new music is by attending California’s most comprehensive annual new-music festival.  Coachella does all of the hours of music listening for you.  Attending the festival is a quick way to catch up on today’s music culture.  The well-rounded festival offers the most vital and creative acts making music today in concert.
The Coachella Festival is a three-day annual music and arts festival organized by Goldenvoice.  Coachella attendance averages 150,000 people over the course of the three day event.  The festival is held at the Empire Polo Fields in Indio, California, in the Inland Empire’s Coachella Valley. The event features many genres of music, primarily focusing on alternative rock, hip hop, and electronic music as well as large sculptural art. The event has several stages/tents set-up throughout the grounds, each playing live music continuously.

The Coachella formula for success is simple, and has kept the event successful for over a decade.

The Coachella strategy: Use a big easy-selling well-known artist to headline each day.  An artist that has been around long enough to attract the older demographic that may not be keeping up on the newest music anymore.
Some of the seasoned artists that have recently headlined the festival are: Paul McCartney, Madonna, Prince, and Radiohead.
Then, the festival organizers lock in the younger demographic (the group on the music pulse) by adding fifty of the best new artists to each day of the event.  These are the artists that will be giants in the years to come.  These are the bands that are buzzing on the hip blogs around the world and selling out clubs and theaters in the big cities.  These are the bands steering the future of music.
Some of the exciting new artists playing the main stage this year include Local Natives, Vampire Weekend, Hockey, Deer Tick, Dirty Projectors, White Rabbits, Beach House, Matt & Kim, M. Ward, Yann Tiersen, and Camera Obscura.

The VISALIA MUSIC SCENE features 11 COACHELLA BANDS right here in town:
Okay, so maybe you don’t want to race around all day in the bustling multi-stage outdoor festival environment to hear new music.

Well luckily if you live in or near Visalia you have a very sweet alternative.  In fact, Visalia’s Sound N Vision Foundation has hosted concerts right here in the valley with eleven artists and bands that are performing at this year’s Coachella Festival.  Not bad for a tiny Central Valley town.
In fact, Visalia has become the most envied small town in California when it comes to the local music scene.
If you don’t fight the huge outdoor crowds of over 100,000 people at Coachella come watch these artists right here in VISALIA at Cellar Door!
This April Visalia will host two exciting 2010 Coachella artists.  A masterful composer from France will play before he hits Coachella, and a stunning pop band from Glasgow will perform in Visalia a few days after their big Coachella performance.

Yann Tiersen is a multi-talented French musician and composer known internationally for composing the entire score to the Jean-Pierre Jeunet movie Amélie.  The elegant work was nominated for five Academy Awards!

Visalia’s Sound N Vision Foundation has arranged this very special Yann Tiersen performance at the intimate Cellar Door as part of Yann Tiersen’s North American tour in route to his big 2010 Coachella Music Festival performance!

Tiersen’s concerts are globally celebrated events, where the audience witnesses a master musician lead his large band while he flawlessly switches from lead violin, piano, accordion, and guitar, often times with one song.

The classically-trained composer (often referred to as ’The Contemporary Chopin’) has been playing piano and violin since age five, and his experience is evident.  His compositions borrow from European classical music and French folk music, incorporating performance aspects reminiscent of Frédéric Chopin, Erik Satie, Philip Glass and Michael Nyman.

Glasgow’s Camera Obscura are fondly regarded by many as one of the UK’s finest acts; having built up over the years a dedicated following with must-have records and well-attended tours throughout Europe, USA, Mexico, Australia and South East Asia.  Camera Obscura’s lastest album “My Maudlin Career” was released by 4AD Records to much critical praise, landing on many “Best Albums of 2009″ lists.  This April the band will play the Coachella Music Festival and shortly thereafter make a stop to perform at Cellar Door.  Tickets are presently on sale and moving fast.
Camera Obscura’s refined sound has become known for centering around smartly arranged, hook-laden songs.  Tracyanne Campbell’s delightfully melancholy voice is both captivating and pitch-perfect.
