Local Club conjures up Horror, Music, Flicks and Fun

The Horror Dolls dance troupe is the Central Valley’s first and only horror-themed theatrical dance troupe.   Kaci, Katie and Saida pay tribute to the genre of horror by performing their choreographed routines that incorporate makeup, prosthetics and gory props.

Katie Oros who creates the choreography, costumes, props and performs with the troupe has been dancing for years and explains the best part about being a Horror Doll is the performance dance! Bringing her ideas to life by the creation of costumes is another part Katie really enjoys.

The Horror Dolls combine lovely ladies, scary monsters, blood, guts, dance and theatrics.  Come check the girls out on All Hallows Eve at The Haunted Cellar. Along with the Horror Dolls, The Central Valley Horror Club will be screening locally-made horror movies filmed and produced right here in the Central Valley with local actors!

The Central Valley Horror Club was created to unite fans of horror films, their creators and the production that goes into the films.  As Kaci Hansen explains, “We also wanted to unite local artists and aspiring filmmakers.  A group of friends often get together and hang out to watch films and discuss movie facts and trivia.  Over time, more and more people became interested in attending our movie nights.  So the idea of forming a club and having our events at a public place was born.”
Kaci and others share a passion for the nostalgic quality and classic feel of the films.  Inspired by “horror” shows such as The Munsters and The Addams Family, Kaci became fascinated that movie makers could obscure that line between fantasy and reality.  It was what also peaked her interest in special effects and makeup artistry.

One such local creation is that of Jerry Smith.  The film is called “The Side of the Road”.  It was filmed in Visalia, as well as the outskirts of Pixley, Tipton and Springville.  The actors were all from Visalia, Tulare, Tipton and Exeter.  “Horror films can be an escape, something to jump into and lose yourself in, with the knowledge that everything will be fine,” explains Jerry.  There will also be a second locally produced film directed by Derek Hill called : Operation Fear
Adding some music to the festive night, The Haunted Cellar will feature the globally famous all-female rock trio know as Shonen Knife.  Over the course of their 27-year career the girls have earned a solid world-wide cult following while repeatedly touring with Nirvana and Sonic Youth.  The band has been credited with making “the international pop underground more international” by opening it up to bands from Japan.  Their sound is heavily influenced by 1960’s girls groups, pop bands, the Beach Boys, and early punk rock acts, such as the Ramones.  The trio crafts stripped-down songs expressing infectious melodies and simplistic, exuberant lyrics sung both in Japanese and English.
