The Big Brewski: Savanna Dry Premium Cider

Good Juice

Take a look outside at your thermometer. If it’s anything like mine, it will read “stupid hot”. It should never be so hot outside that when you turn the garden hose on, you have to wait two minutes for the water to cool from a boil. It’s times like this when even a light beer can seem heavy. Believe it or not, this is when I suggest you turn to a cider. I know, it sounds risky, but you’re just going to have to trust me on this one—because we’re not just talking about any cider here. I generally wouldn’t be caught dead with a “light beer “ (unless I need a substitute for water when I’m out at the lake), let alone a cider, but I just can’t help but love Savanna Dry Premium Cider.

Savanna Dry was launched in May 1996, in a unique 340ml clear bottle design, establishing Savanna as an innovative, “premium” brand—a long stride away from the traditional cider market place. A genuine import from South Africa, it is naturally brewed from Granny Smith apples grown on the Western Cape.
Savanna Dry is generally consumed straight from the bottle, often with a lemon wedge in the neck. This has become a popular drinking ritual now synonymous with the “Savanna Experience”. With the lemon wedge, the slight sour citrus compliments the Granny Smith apple flavors. This cider is dry, which means it’s more refreshing than sweet. All too often, ciders end up cloyingly sweet, leaving the consumer with a sugary, lackluster experience. Savanna delivers the complete opposite. The dry finish makes it amazingly easy to drink… almost too easy. At 6% Alcohol by Volume, it also makes it worth drinking, whereas most other ciders top out at ~4%. With just a hint of fizziness, it completes the package—making this the perfect summer beverage.

Now here is the bad part: you cannot find this beverage anywhere but here, at The Cellar Door. The nearest place I’ve found Savanna Dry is in Los Angeles. This is a great beverage, and hopefully you’ll be able to find it elsewhere as the years go by. Until then, stop on in for the “Savanna Experience” and ride the Savanna train.

“Savanna.  It’s dry, but you can drink it.”

Cheers, and happy sipping.
