Saving the Green while being Green

Shades of Green

by Shea Gowin

With Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger asking Californians to reduce their water consumption by 20 percent to ease the state’s drought conditions and cities imposing mandatory water restrictions, a creative new way to maintain a beautiful green yard is emerging. This new trend in lawn care can save you some green and “go green” all at the same time. Drought, high water bills, and restrictions on water use have created a new trend for lawns in the Valley, paint them green!  Spraying your grass green is the new eco-friendly way to save both money and water and get you through the hot valley summer with a green lawn. Yes, the process is to spray your grass green with a permanent natural pigment which will allow you to reduce your watering, mow less often, and still have the neighbors complement your yard.

This new idea is sweeping the country. The “Green” lawn service can reduce the need for watering by 30 to 50 percent thus conserving water, lowering costs and still maintaining beautiful green lawns that will enhance the look of community’s all over.  The service involves applying an environmentally-friendly permanent green pigment that will keep the grass looking fresh and green for up to three months. This service is a completely new concept here in our area, but it’s already being utilized effectively in other counties and states to combat the drought.
Currently there is a locally owned company available that is doing the grass painting. Gowin Green Landscape Maintenance located in Tulare can give “Instant Green Lawn Service” to homeowners, businesses owners, apartment complex’s, and city’s.
This is an environmentally friendly dye that turns your grass green until you mow it. The ammonia-based pigment breaks down into nitrogen, which also feeds the lawn. It takes about two hours to dry, will not rub off on pets or bare feet and will last for three to four months. Additionally, it does not wash off in the rain or fade with watering. Your lawn can be sprayed a lush, beautiful natural green color instantly. The service can be utilized all year long. They use the same type of dye that is used on professional football fields and golf courses.
Another trend that is unfortunately sweeping the Valley is the dead lawns of the many foreclosed homes in our cities due to the economic devastation. Spraying these yards can benefit our communities by lessening the blight of those brown, dead lawns. It could cut down on vandalism, property damage, and intruders because the homes will appear to be maintained and lived in. No sod or seed required just spray and convert a completely dead lawn into an instant green lush yard. This is one of the most cost effective ways to add some curb appeal and save some “green” in these difficult times.
While we are faced with a continued drought situation and the number of foreclosed homes is rising, there are innovative and economical solutions being created. Check out ways you can stay green!
