2009 A Year to Express Who You Are!
» april worford
April Warford has over 15 years of experience as a stylist and is the owner of Eclectic Chic Salon in Visalia.

This is the year to express yourself!  2009 women’s hair trends will play to the extremes. They might be extremely short, extremely girly, extremely sexual or extremely slick.  The trends will range from boy-short crops to natural long tresses with the bob in-between.  Whatever you choose, it’s a new year and with anticipation for positive change, now’s the time to be who you want to be!

As a hair stylist I am fortunate to have the opportunity to grant someone a fresh start with their appearance every time I am behind the chair.  I have realized that many of us would just like a little affirmation that we are on the right track with our own personal style and there are also those who are perfectly content with things just the way they are. With those two groups of individuals in mind I have come up with a little inspiration for taking your own personal style into the year 2009.

For those of you that have the outlook, “if it aint broke, don’t fix it” I hear you loud and clear. Sometimes the thought of change or knowing what to change, feels so overwhelming. But, I am here to give you a gentle nudge that sometimes the small changes we make are the ones that make the biggest difference in our appearance. If you are an adventurous soul and can’t wait to try the newest and hottest styles then I think you will find these tips useful.

I feel that it is important to give you visual aids for what some of the current trends are and a little bit of an idea of how you can achieve these looks on your own. The models used in this article were all asked to do their own hair without any touch ups from a professional. This helps to showcase some of the cool trends for 2009 and hopefully give you added encouragement to try this at home.

Jaclyn has naturally curly hair and this short haircut gives her a very current look.  Using the right product and a flat iron, she then used a molding mud as a finishing product to achieve a look that says she is cutting edge.

Katlyn has the perfect texture for this classic bob, it is a haircut that she can blow-dry and go and still look completely polished. Katlyn has a subtle cowlick in her bang area, so by cutting a heavy bang she is able to use a brush and blow-dry her bangs opposite of the way she parts. This will help relax that problem area and help those bangs behave. Bangs are a great way to frame the face.

Brittny has shoulder length hair that she has fun doing different things with. I asked her to do something with Bobbi pins to show how simple it can be. The first ingredient to achieving a style that says” I’m hip” is to do the proper backcombing. This will help hold the pins and give you a little lift where you need it. It’s important to note that it isn’t necessary to hide every pin, and it is the imperfections of a casual up do that make it unique and beautiful. Also note that a high or low ponytail is a very current way to pull your hair back.

Tawnya has long hair that has an ample amount of body. She lightly curled her hair and made sure to separate the curls with her fingers to give it a nice soft look. Backcombing the crown (top of her head) to give it height she then lightly pulled it back allowing some of the pieces to lightly fall forward. Keep in mind that hair should be pulled up as though it was given very little effort, even if the truth is that you threw a couple brushes in the process!

Be inspired in 2009 to explore small changes in your style.  Or for you adventurous souls, go all out.  This is the year to do it!

HOT TIPS

Want Hot Hair?
Brian Cody, owner of Renaissance Salon and Day Spa in downtown Visalia shares his 2009 Hair tips.

Short and long are staying in with texturing being a factor for that great look in both. Volume will be important with the emphasis on softness. Go with a natural look and you will be in. Keep your color fresh and golden blond. The warm colors will remain strong so go with warm reds and caramels for a color change that can spice up the new you!

Beauty Purchases
Ray Duenez predicts, during tough economic times, consumers will be making budget decisions to choose multi-tasking products when it comes to beauty purchases. Products to look for will take care of both anti-aging and sun damage. Savvy consumers will be looking for specific ingredients that will target more areas of concern for less.  Eyelash weaving (extensions) will continue to be popular. Lips, Cheeks and eyes will be bold colors for 2009.
